The concept of intersectionality has significant implications for education. The intersectional training approach fosters awareness of the complexity of individual identities and trajectories; provides context analysis tools in relation to global and local power systems; illuminates blind spots by highlighting the specifics of each single discriminatory situation; values the voice and experience of people from minority groups; strengthens the capacity to be agents of change towards greater social justice. The training course created by the Marche Region as part of the INGRiD project (October-November 2022) was aimed at the personnel of the regional and municipal administrations of the Marche region in the sectors of Education, Social Innovation and Sport, Sustainable Development, Equal Opportunities, Social Policies and Innovation, and International Cooperation. The training had the objective of raising the awareness of the participants by increasing their ability to recognise and combat discrimination using an intersectional approach. Furthermore, this course wanted to explore the need for careful and inclusive communication in relation to forms of intersectional discrimination, and to let people understand how equity – and consequently Global Citizenship education and intersectional discrimination – are placed within the Sustainable Development Strategies (National and Regional), the National ECG Strategy and the 2030 Agenda. 16 participants took part in the 19-hour training course. The training favoured the construction of a space for discussion and education in relation to issues of intersectionality and the fight against discrimination, with a focus on careful and inclusive communication. The sensitivity and interests of the participants, combined with an experiential and interactive methodology, were key elements for the success of the training: in the interactive moments, personal experiences of intersectional discrimination emerged which engaged and raised the awareness of the whole class. The training experience within the INGRiD project has led the Marche Region to create a training course on a topic that is still little known among the staff, but of fundamental importance both within the group/work environment in the dynamics between colleagues and superiors, both in the performance of one’s work duties in the relationship with users, leading the way for useful and necessary future training and insights on this issue.
